Marshall Murdaugh began his career more than thirty-five years ago in destination marketing (and is perhaps best known by some as the developer of the award-winning “Virginia is for Lovers” marketing program). He served as President and CEO for some of America’s most successful destinations, including the Virginia Tourism Office, Memphis, TN and New York City’s Convention and Visitors Bureau during the 80’s-early 90’s, where he worked to make the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center a successful venue for conventions and trade shows.

From 1994-2000, he was Executive Director of the Atlantic City Convention and Visitors Authority, provided oversight management for the construction and successful operation of the new $275M, 500,000 square-foot convention center. When the doors to “America’s New Northeast Business Address” opened in 1997, he was credited with producing more than 290 future meetings that assured the long term success of that major new meetings market. Murdaugh was on the national performance team and a principal developer of the industry’s convention and visitor performance standards and return on investment criteria for the Destination Marketing Association International (of CVBs).

He wrote the Destination Marketing section for the convention and visitor industry’s recent textbook, “Fundamentals of Destination Management and Marketing”. He also authored a “Destination Performance Self-assessment” manual; a recognized industry resource for professional destination marketing development. His new ground-breaking industry book, “Destination Marketing Insights”, which contains numerous case histories for center management and marketing, is scheduled for release later this spring.
Murdaugh served as a Consultant to the Visit USA Program and received the United States Department of Commerce’s first Special Citation for Distinguished Service to that Agency. He is also the recipient of the prestigious Atlas Award for Lifetime Career Achievement from the Association of Travel Marketing Executives. He served as a member of the Board of the International Association of Convention and Visitor Bureaus and the U.S. Travel Association.
