Cedar Rapids Ice Arena Adds Virtual Reality Arcade

CRVR Grand Opening Weekend Set for Friday, July 12th

(Cedar Rapids, IA) – VenuWorks of Cedar Rapids, the management group that oversees operations for the City-owned Cedar Rapids Ice Arena (CRIA), today announced CRVR – a new 6 six-booth virtual reality arcade located in the newly renovated lobby of CRIA. A ribbon cutting will be held Thursday, July 11th at 4 p.m. and a grand-opening weekend will be held July 12th – 14th.

CRVR features cutting-edge virtual reality technology allowing for both single and multi-player gaming experiences for players. The arcade’s library of games will start with 14 popular titles including Beat Saber, Arizona Sunshine, Job Simulator, VR Battle Grid and several others. 30-minute blocks of time can be purchased for $15 and players can play as many titles as they wish during their blocks of time. CRIA staff will manage the experience, including monitoring age restrictions on games with ESRB ratings not appropriate for younger children. CRVR hours of operation will be 3 p.m. – 10 p.m. to start with; depending on traffic and demand, hours may expand in the future.

“We are excited to add CRVR to the menu of services at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena,” said Katie Ripke, Director of Marketing and Sales. “The ice arena plays an important part in providing a robust quality of life in our community and welcomes over 200,000 patrons each year. This new service gives patrons yet another reason to visit the ice arena and will attract a new, diverse crowd to this community center.”

“Cedar Rapids Ice Arena staff have worked hard to create a quality experience for residents and visitors enjoying the arena. ” said Casey Drew, Cedar Rapids Finance Director. “This new virtual reality arcade is a unique amenity to our community that will provide another fun entertainment option for all ages.”

The addition of CRVR adds to a series of building improvements at CRIA. Earlier this year, VenuWorks shared a $1.5 million multi-year venue improvement plan including the build-out of a new concession stand with more food and beverage options, installation of new decks in the endzones and installation of new seats in the NHL rink, a new website, as well as expanded services and communication tools. These improvements are in addition to other recent investments made by the City including two new ice resurfacers, HVAC system upgrades and other operational updates.

Additionally, the venue continues to focus on growing in-house programming, including a rapidly growing Learn to Skate program and expanded public skates. Other skating-related programs offered include figure skating, youth and adult hockey, skating lessons and birthday parties. The venue is also home to the USHL Cedar Rapids RoughRiders semi-professional hockey team.
